About Us Founder of Nerd Herd Tours

How it started....

Hi, I’m Martin – Founder of Nerd Herd Tours. I grew up visiting the City with my best friend whose grandmother lived on Staten Island. We would take the SI Ferry into the City, often with only $20 in our pockets. This led to hours of walking around and looking at magnificent things and having no idea what they were.

This was back in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. Wikipedia and smart phones had not been invented yet and Google was only in the beginning of developing its indexing algorithms. People actually went to libraries to look things up. It wasn’t the most efficient way to learn new information or meet girls. So, for years I wondered about the buildings and places we saw and the history of the neighborhoods we wandered.

With time, more access to information became available. Over the years I have spent countless hours reading books, scouring blogs, listening to podcasts, and devouring Wikipedia pages (checking their sources of course). I can now say I have a much better understanding of the history of the City and many of the places that fascinated me as a teenager.

I would like to share that knowledge with you!

Nerd Herd Tours was founded in December of 2019, three months before Covid-19 would shut tourism to the City down for a year and a half. Going into the Pandemic three tours were already launched. During the downtime many new tours were researched and developed.

Check out our tours menu and find a tour that fits your interests. We don’t just do typical landmarks; but when we do, we go in depth and beyond hacky surficial information. We also have tours on some niche interests that run the gambit from the history of Gay rights activism prior to the Stonewall Riots, to the American Nazi sympathizers and German spies that crawled around the Upper East Side in the years leading up to and during World War II.

There is something for everyone.

So, lets’ get nerdy!

– Martin
